History of the HMAS Bundaberg II
The HMAS Bundaberg II was an Armidale-class patrol boat of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), named after the city of Bundaberg in Queensland. Commissioned in 2007, the Bundaberg II served as part of Australia’s maritime security initiatives, designed to replace the Fremantle-class patrol boats with a more advanced and capable fleet. The Armidale-class vessels were built specifically for border protection operations, such as fisheries enforcement, immigration control, counter-terrorism, and smuggling deterrence.
During her service, the HMAS Bundaberg II was deployed across Australia’s northern waters, supporting both national and regional security operations. The vessel was well-regarded for its agility and effectiveness in multi-role missions, contributing significantly to Australia’s maritime defense.
Unfortunately, the HMAS Bundaberg II met an unexpected end in 2014 when a fire broke out during maintenance in a civilian shipyard in Brisbane. The damage was extensive, and the vessel was subsequently decommissioned. Despite her untimely loss, the HMAS Bundaberg II is remembered for her dedicated service and remains a notable part of Australia’s naval history.
