For tens of thousands of Greek Australians, the story begins with one ship: Patris. The “Homeland” was Chandris Lines’ very first ocean liner – the pioneer that opened the Piraeus-Melbourne-Sydney run in 1959, at times carrying entire villages to a new life in Australia, and paving the way for the famous Chandris fleet that followed. This 86cm model captures her in the classic Chandris livery: white hull with blue ribbon, red antifouling and the single black-topped funnel bearing the famous white “X”, with warm LED lighting that brings her decks to life.
Few ships are so deeply woven into the Australian migration story. To a generation of Greek migrants the Patris was both the last of the old country and the first of the new – and her name is still spoken with affection in Greek Australian households today. If your family’s journey began at her gangway, this is a piece of your own history, handcrafted to keep.

Key features of the RHMS Patris ship model with LED lights:

  • Dimensions: 86cmL x 13cmW x 31cmH (33.9″ L x 5.1″ W x 12.2″ H) – approx. 1:210 scale
  • Faithfully painted in Chandris Lines livery with the blue “X” funnel and Greek flag at the stern
  • Plank-on-frame construction with individual wood strips applied to the hull
  • All windows, portholes and deck details carved directly into the timber – no stickers or decals
  • Warm LED lighting illuminates the superstructure, decks and portholes
  • Finely detailed lifeboats, cargo derricks, deck games and swimming pools
  • Illuminated “PATRIS” name sign on the boat deck, just as on the real ship
  • Built entirely with wooden and metal fittings – no plastic components
  • Mounted on a polished wooden stand with a brass RHMS Patris nameplate
  • Want to display your RHMS Patris in full view? We have display case that you can pick from. (The case is sold separably).

The story of the RHMS Patris

She was built in Belfast by Harland & Wolff – the yard of Titanic fame – and launched in 1950 as the Bloemfontein Castle for Union-Castle Line’s Africa service. In 1953 she earned her first place in maritime history, coming to the rescue of the sinking Dutch liner Klipfontein off the coast of Mozambique and taking aboard her passengers and crew.
Her true calling came in 1959, when the Chandris brothers purchased her as the foundation of their new passenger fleet. Refitted in Greece and renamed Patris – “Homeland” – she departed Piraeus on her first voyage to Australia in December 1959, inaugurating the Chandris migrant service that the Australis, Ellinis and Britanis would later join. Through the 1960s she became an institution among Greek migrants, her arrivals at Station Pier in Melbourne and Pyrmont in Sydney marking the first Australian moments of countless family stories.
The Patris also holds a special place in one of Australia’s darkest chapters. After Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin in December 1974, she was sent north and anchored in Darwin Harbour for months as a floating hotel, housing hundreds of relief and reconstruction workers who rebuilt the shattered city.
RHMS – Royal Hellenic Mail Ship – Patris left Australian service in the mid-1970s and ended her days in the Mediterranean, but among Greek Australian families her name is still spoken with real affection. This model preserves her exactly as she looked in her prime on the Piraeus-Australia run.
