Launched in 1948, the Shearwater was a two-masted auxiliary ketch built for Frank Jackson of Emita, Flinders Island. Purpose-built for the Flinders Island trade, she was a testament to post-war Australian craftsmanship and ingenuity—famously transporting a 26-seat bus as deck cargo to support the island’s school. Constructed from hardwood with celery top decking, the Shearwater played a vital role in connecting the remote Tasmanian islands to the mainland.
Our handcrafted Shearwater model ship pays tribute to this iconic vessel. Expertly built using traditional timber techniques, this replica captures the classic lines, rigging, and charm of the original ketch. A meaningful piece for collectors and maritime history enthusiasts alike.
Launched in July 1948, the Shearwater was a two-masted auxiliary Marconi ketch, purpose-built for coastal trade in Tasmania. Constructed using carvel planking over robust hardwood frames, she featured a raked stem, counter stern, and celery top decking—designed to endure the often rough conditions of Bass Strait. Commissioned by Frank Jackson of Emita on Flinders Island, the Shearwater played a vital role in the post-war supply routes between Launceston, Hobart, and the remote Furneaux Islands.
One of her most remarkable voyages took place in 1949, when she carried a 26-seat KS5 International bus as deck cargo to Flinders Island—an incredible feat of balance and resourcefulness. With 50 tonnes of bagged fertiliser as ballast in her hold and petrol drums supporting the deck, the journey showcased the ingenuity of her crew and the versatility of the vessel. For many island residents, the Shearwater was more than just a workhorse; she was a lifeline to the mainland and a symbol of resilience in the face of isolation.
