The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was a legendary American Great Lakes freighter launched on 7 June 1958. At the time of her launch, she was the largest ship on North America’s Great Lakes, measuring 729 feet (222 metres) in length. Built to transport taconite iron ore from mines near Duluth, Minnesota, to steel mills around the Great Lakes region, the vessel quickly became well known for her impressive size, speed, and reliability. Named after Edmund Fitzgerald, the chairman of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, the ship was considered one of the pride vessels of the Great Lakes shipping industry.
For nearly two decades, the Edmund Fitzgerald safely carried millions of tons of cargo across the often harsh waters of the Great Lakes. However, on 10 November 1975, while sailing across Lake Superior during a severe storm with hurricane-force winds and massive waves, the ship tragically sank with all 29 crew members lost. The exact cause of the sinking remains uncertain and has been the subject of investigation and debate for decades. The tragedy deeply impacted maritime communities across North America and remains one of the most famous shipwrecks in Great Lakes history.
The story of the Edmund Fitzgerald became internationally known through Gordon Lightfoot’s iconic 1976 song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” which helped preserve the memory of the ship and her crew. Today, the Edmund Fitzgerald remains a powerful symbol of the dangers faced by Great Lakes sailors and continues to fascinate maritime historians, ship enthusiasts, and collectors around the world.
