The Yamato holds a unique place in naval history as the heaviest and most powerfully armed battleship ever built — the legendary flagship of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Combined Fleet and a name that still commands awe among naval enthusiasts the world over.

Our hand-crafted wooden model does justice to this extraordinary vessel. Every element has been faithfully recreated by our skilled craftsmen, from her unmistakable pagoda superstructure and towering triple main turrets to her radar arrays, delicate rigging and stern aircraft deck complete with floatplanes. Finished in her authentic wartime livery of grey upperworks over a red hull and flying the Imperial Japanese Navy ensign, this is a commanding centrepiece for any home, office or collection — and a superb gift for lovers of naval history.

About the Yamato

Laid down in strict secrecy at the Kure Naval Arsenal, Yamato was commissioned into the Imperial Japanese Navy on 16 December 1941, just days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. She was conceived to outgun any warship afloat: at full load she displaced more than 70,000 tonnes, and her nine 46cm (18.1-inch) main guns remain the largest ever fitted to a warship — a scale no battleship before or since has matched.

As flagship of the Combined Fleet, Yamato carried Admiral Yamamoto’s flag and took part in operations across the Pacific, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944, the largest naval battle of the Second World War. Her final chapter came on 7 April 1945, when she sailed on Operation Ten-Go, a one-way mission towards Okinawa. Attacked by waves of American carrier aircraft, she sank with the loss of most of her crew — an end that marked the close of the battleship era. Today her legend lives on in Japanese culture and beyond, from the Yamato Museum in Kure to countless films, books and documentaries.
