The Evolved Cape-Class Patrol Boats (ECCPBs) were developed as an advanced successor to the original Cape-Class, which had served both the Australian Border Force and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). In 2020, the Australian Government announced the acquisition of six Evolved Cape-Class vessels for the RAN, later increasing the order to eight, as part of a strategy to modernise Australia’s patrol capabilities and replace the ageing Armidale-class patrol boats. Built by Austal in Western Australia, these vessels incorporate significant design enhancements, including improved crew accommodations, greater operational range, and upgraded mission systems.
Unlike the original Cape-Class, which were shared between civilian and military duties, the Evolved variant is used exclusively by the Royal Australian Navy. Their primary missions include maritime border security, surveillance, fisheries protection, and supporting humanitarian and disaster relief operations. With a focus on enhanced endurance and versatility, the ECCPBs have become a crucial asset for maintaining Australia’s maritime sovereignty and responding rapidly to threats or emergencies in the region.
The Evolved Cape-Class Patrol Boats continue the tradition of being named after prominent Australian capes, symbolising their role in safeguarding the nation’s vast coastline. Their introduction marks a significant step in the ongoing evolution of Australia’s naval fleet, bridging the gap between existing patrol vessels and future offshore patrol platforms such as the Arafura-class.
