History of the HMAS Bundaberg II

HMAS Bundaberg (ACPB 91) was an Armidale-class patrol boat commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) on March 3, 2007. Named after the city of Bundaberg in Queensland, this vessel was part of a broader initiative to enhance Australia’s maritime defense capabilities. The Armidale-class patrol boats were designed to perform a range of duties including border protection, fisheries enforcement, and maritime surveillance. Bundaberg and its sister ships played a pivotal role in safeguarding Australia’s extensive coastline and exclusive economic zone.

Throughout its operational life, HMAS Bundaberg was actively involved in Operation Resolute, the Australian Defence Force’s contribution to the protection of Australia’s borders and offshore maritime interests. This operation included deterring and preventing illegal maritime arrivals, smuggling, and other transnational crimes. The vessel’s advanced capabilities allowed it to undertake complex missions, including search and rescue operations and responding to maritime emergencies. The crew of Bundaberg often worked in collaboration with other national and international agencies to maintain maritime security and safety in the region.

Tragically, on August 11, 2014, HMAS Bundaberg was severely damaged by a fire while undergoing maintenance at a civilian shipyard in Hemmant, Brisbane. Despite efforts to extinguish the blaze, the damage was extensive, leading to the decision to decommission the vessel. On December 18, 2014, HMAS Bundaberg was officially decommissioned, marking the end of its service with the RAN.
