The history of the HMAS Perth FFH157

First laid down in 2003, the HMAS Perth FFH157 is the last ship in the Anzac-class range of frigates to be built. It was a massive undertaking, with a huge amount of precision and care needed in construction. The HMAS Perth came to be after a huge amount of work, with the Anzac-class range of frigates proving that Australian naval developments were suited to military creations after all. This was a collaboration alongside the Royal New Zealand Navy, as well.

A whopping 118m in size, it was capable of managing a displacement of 3,810 tons at full load. In terms of operational history, the ship has engaged in some very interesting activities. Indeed, it was commanded by Commander Michele Miller from the off-set, making her the first woman to be in command of a major RAN warship. It was modified in 2010 to adjust it for the Anti-Ship Missile Defence Project. This helped to improve its anti-ship capabilities even further, with various new tracking and radar systems fitted to improve performance.

With a height of 38.7m it’s one of the tallest ships in the RAN. It’s most recent activities including taking part in the International Fleet Review of 2013 in Sydney, as well as playing a part in various new at-sea trials for the MH-60R Seahawk Romeo. It’s major function so far has been an anti-criminal activity. In the past, it has been based in the Middle East region as part of Operation Manitou. Today, it plays a role mostly in helping to combat issues such as piracy and drug trafficking.
