HMAS Wollongong (ACPB 92) was an Armidale-class patrol boat of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), named after the coastal city of Wollongong in New South Wales. Built by Austal Ships in Henderson, Western Australia, she was commissioned on 23 June 2007 and based at HMAS Cairns. As the tenth vessel in her class, Wollongong was designed for extended patrols, capable of covering vast maritime areas with enhanced endurance and modern surveillance systems.
Throughout her 15 years of service, HMAS Wollongong played a vital role in Australia’s maritime security. She was actively involved in border protection operations, working alongside agencies such as the Australian Border Force, Australian Fisheries, and the Australian Federal Police. Her missions included intercepting illegal fishing vessels, preventing unauthorized maritime arrivals, and supporting regional security initiatives. Notably, Wollongong participated in Operations AUGURY (Philippines), SOLANIA (South West Pacific), and APEC ASSIST (Papua New Guinea), as well as providing security during the 2019 G20 Summit in Japan.
After steaming nearly one million kilometers during her service, HMAS Wollongong was decommissioned on 8 December 2022 at a ceremony in Cairns. The event honored the dedication and professionalism of her crew, who contributed significantly to safeguarding Australia’s maritime interests. The decommissioning marked the transition to newer patrol vessels, such as the Arafura-class offshore patrol vessels, which are set to enhance the RAN’s capabilities in future maritime operations.
