The MV Krait is one of the most iconic vessels in Australian wartime history, best known for its role in Operation Jaywick, one of World War II’s most daring and successful covert operations. Originally a humble Japanese fishing vessel, the Krait was captured by Allied forces in 1942 during the early stages of the Pacific War. She was repurposed by the Australian military and given the name Krait, inspired by a small but deadly snake, symbolising stealth and precision.
In September 1943, the MV Krait carried a team of Australian and British commandos from Z Special Unit on a secret mission deep into Japanese-occupied waters. Disguised as local fishermen, the crew sailed from Exmouth, Western Australia, to Singapore — a journey of over 4,000 kilometres. Their mission, known as Operation Jaywick, aimed to infiltrate Singapore Harbour and sabotage enemy shipping. Against extraordinary odds, the team successfully attached limpet mines to Japanese vessels, sinking or damaging multiple enemy ships without detection.
The operation was hailed as a significant victory, showcasing the courage, ingenuity, and resourcefulness of Australia’s special forces. It boosted Allied morale at a critical time during the Pacific conflict and remains a proud chapter in Australia’s military legacy. The MV Krait became a symbol of determination and the quiet heroism of those who serve behind the scenes.
Following the war, the MV Krait was preserved as a historical artefact and is now part of the collection at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney. Her legacy continues to inspire Australians, serving as a reminder of the bravery and sacrifice made in the defence of freedom.
