HMAS Dubbo (FCPB 214) was a Fremantle-class patrol boat of the Royal Australian Navy, named after the inland city of Dubbo in New South Wales. She was constructed by NQEA in Cairns, Queensland, and launched in June 1983 before being commissioned later that year. As part of the fifteen-strong Fremantle-class, HMAS Dubbo was designed to conduct a wide range of coastal and offshore patrol duties vital to Australia’s maritime security.
Throughout her service, HMAS Dubbo was primarily based out of HMAS Coonawarra in Darwin. She played a key role in border protection, fisheries enforcement, and coastal surveillance, particularly in Australia’s northern waters. The vessel was also involved in operations such as Operation Relex, which focused on deterring and intercepting unauthorised maritime arrivals. Like other ships in her class, she was fast, agile, and equipped for long-range patrols, making her an essential asset in maintaining the integrity of Australia’s maritime borders.
After more than 20 years of service, HMAS Dubbo was decommissioned in March 2007 as the newer Armidale-class patrol boats entered service. Her legacy, along with that of her sister ships, marks an important chapter in the Royal Australian Navy’s peacetime operational history, reflecting the enduring importance of patrol vessels in safeguarding Australia’s maritime interests.
