The History of HMAS Childers (ACPB 93)

HMAS Childers (ACPB 93) is an Armidale-class patrol boat of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), commissioned on 7 July 2007. Named after the town of Childers in Queensland, the vessel was built by Austal Ships in Western Australia as part of the RAN’s effort to modernize its patrol fleet. Replacing the older Fremantle-class patrol boats, the Armidale-class introduced superior speed, endurance, and advanced surveillance capabilities, making them essential for Australia’s maritime security operations.

Designed primarily for border protection, fisheries patrol, counter-terrorism, and anti-smuggling missions, HMAS Childers operates extensively in Australian waters and the broader Indo-Pacific region. With a robust aluminium hull, a length of 56.8 meters, and a top speed of 25 knots (46 km/h), the ship is well-suited for high-speed patrol duties. Its state-of-the-art communication and radar systems allow it to operate effectively in coordination with Australian and allied forces.

Over the years, HMAS Childers has played a key role in Operation Resolute, Australia’s mission to safeguard its maritime borders. The patrol boat has also participated in multinational security exercises, enhancing regional stability and strengthening Australia’s naval partnerships. As part of a class designed to operate for up to 21 days at sea, HMAS Childers continues to be an essential asset in protecting Australian waters and national interests.
