The Huon-class minehunters were developed for the Royal Australian Navy in the 1990s to replace the ageing Bay-class vessels. Built by Australian Defence Industries (ADI) in partnership with Intermarine SpA of Italy, the ships were based on the proven Gaeta-class design but were modified to suit Australian conditions and operational needs.
Construction began in 1994, and the lead ship, HMAS Huon (M 82), was launched in 1997 and commissioned in May 1999. The class was specifically designed for mine detection, classification and disposal, featuring a glass-reinforced plastic hull to withstand underwater shock and reduce magnetic signature. Equipped with advanced sonar systems and remote-controlled mine disposal vehicles, the Huon-class offered exceptional precision and safety in mine-warfare operations.
Throughout their service, the Huon-class vessels carried out mine-countermeasure, patrol, and training duties, both in Australian waters and overseas. They participated in joint exercises with allied navies and supported operations such as peacekeeping missions in the Solomon Islands.
After more than two decades of service, the Huon-class began gradual retirement as newer autonomous systems were introduced. HMAS Huon was decommissioned in May 2024, marking the end of an important chapter in Australia’s naval history.
