Commissioned on 17 August 2002, HMAS Stuart (FFH 153) is the third Royal Australian Navy (RAN) vessel to bear the name. Constructed by Tenix Defence Systems in Williamstown, Victoria, she is the fourth of eight Anzac-class frigates, which are based on the German MEKO 200 design. These long-range frigates are equipped for air defense, surface and undersea warfare, surveillance, reconnaissance, and interdiction missions.
Throughout her service, HMAS Stuart has participated in various significant operations. In 2004, she was deployed to the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Catalyst, Australia’s contribution to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Iraq. During this deployment, Stuart played a crucial role in maritime security and coalition operations. In 2011, while operating off the coast of Somalia, she engaged in anti-piracy missions, including the interdiction of a Yemeni-flagged dhow, rescuing hostages, and deterring pirate activities.
To maintain her operational effectiveness, HMAS Stuart underwent the Anti-Ship Missile Defence (ASMD) upgrade, which significantly enhanced her combat capabilities. This upgrade included the installation of advanced phased array radar technology designed by CEA Technologies, combat system enhancements by Saab Systems, and platform integration by BAE Systems. These improvements have ensured that Stuart remains a formidable asset within the RAN fleet, capable of addressing contemporary maritime threats.
