HMAS Perth (I) was a Modified Leander-class light cruiser of the Royal Australian Navy and one of the most respected Australian warships of the Second World War. Originally built for the Royal Navy as HMS Amphion, she was transferred to Australia and commissioned as HMAS Perth in 1939. Strong, fast, and well-armed for her class, she quickly became an important part of Australia’s wartime naval service.
During the war, HMAS Perth served in several theatres, including the Mediterranean and later the Pacific. She took part in escort duties, patrols, and fleet operations, earning admiration for the courage and professionalism of her crew. Her most famous and final action came in February 1942 during the Battle of Sunda Strait, when she fought alongside the American cruiser USS Houston against overwhelming Japanese forces.
Outnumbered and outgunned, HMAS Perth fought bravely until she was sunk in the early hours of 1 March 1942. The loss of the ship and many of her crew remains one of the most significant sacrifices in Australian naval history, and HMAS Perth (I) continues to be remembered with deep respect and honour.
