As part of what makes the US Navy so great is the variety, the sheer number of wartime ships created over the years has always been seen as a strength. Indeed, various ships over the years have managed to gain major status within the halls of American naval history. One ship that fits this bill is the USS California (BB-44). This ship was one of just two Tennessee-class battleships and came to completion shortly after the end of the First World War. It was the last US battleship to be developed and built on the West Coast, giving it a very strong historical tie and connection with many parts of US naval history.
As a historical piece of naval planning and development, the USS California still holds a very strong reputation to this day. Our replica model provides you with the ideal way to show the USS California in a glass container, or as part of a wider collection of ships that you own.
The USS California was a powerful vessel, and holds significance as being the only dreadnought type ship to be developed on the US western coast. The ship served its entire military career within the Pacific, where the Americans done much of their fighting in the Second World War. For twenty years, the USS California served as part of the Pacific Fleet.
However, the USS California – while having a glorious history and a long service record – was eventually sunk. It was one of the many victims that was lost during the Pearl Harbor incident. The ship was moored at Battleship Row, but was obliterated during the incident. However, the ship itself was eventually salvaged, put back together, and reconstructed in full.
After being rebuilt, the USS California spent more time serving as part of the US Navy and played a key role in the rest of the Second World War. The fact it was brought back to action so quickly after its destruction was regarded as a feat of engineering, and helped to raise morale among the US naval forces in the aftermath of the attack.
Playing a role in the successful victory of the war, the USS California was eventually taken out of the firing line in 1947. The damage that has been done beforehand was gone, but the ship was slowly but surely being left behind in terms of technology. The costs involved with refitting the ship to keep it modern would have been too great, so the decision was made in 1959 to scrap the ship.
The USS California was then sold on for scrap in 1959, and the ship was left to be part of the history books on its own. A truly spectacular feat of engineering at the time, the renewal and rebirth of the USS California is almost as impressive as its service record. Having played a big role in helping the US win during the war, the USS California will surely go down in history as one of the most consistent and resilient battleships of the Second World War era.
